Tools We Use

The Data Strategy team uses a suite of enterprise tools to manage, govern, and analyze data across Georgetown University. Each tool plays a specific role in the data lifecycle — from storage and governance to reporting and visualization. Together, these systems ensure that data is accurate, secure, and accessible for decision-making.

BI Tools

Cognos supports enterprise reporting across Georgetown, delivering structured, scheduled reports that summarize activity and performance. It provides trusted, repeatable outputs that help departments track key metrics and meet reporting requirements.

Tableau is Georgetown’s primary data visualization and dashboarding tool. It transforms data into interactive visual insights that support operational tracking and strategic decision-making.

Data Engineering Tools

BigQuery is Georgetown’s central data platform, where large and complex datasets are stored, organized, and processed. It serves as the foundation of the university’s analytics environment, supporting secure access, scalability, and performance for analysis and reporting.

Google Cloud Storage provides scalable, secure storage for raw and intermediate data. It functions as the university’s data lake, housing information before it’s transformed or loaded into BigQuery for structured analysis and reporting.

Data Governance Tools

Collibra is Georgetown’s data governance and cataloging platform. It provides a single location to define data terms, document sources, and manage stewardship. Collibra ensures that data is consistent, clearly defined, and responsibly managed across the university.
